From up the stairs we could hear
the querulous old voices of the boarders demanding to know what had happened.
Miss Whitlaw shouted up the stairs, "Everything's all right."
"Are you sure?" Father asked quietly.
Miss Whitlaw laughed. "From top
to bottom. Papa always built well. He said he wanted a house that could
hold a herd of thundering elephants--that was what he always called Mama's
family. He never liked them much."
