Commas. Copy into notebook.

Commas:
1. Separate items in a series.
2. Usually come before and, but, or.
3. Are used when phrases introduce the sentence.
4. Are used when phrases interrupt the sentence.

Semicolons:
1. Are used to separate independent clauses (parts of a sentence that could be sentences on their own).

First determine if each sentence below needs commas or semicolons; some don't need any, some need several. For each one, write the word that comes before the comma or semicolon you are inserting, the comma or semicolon, and then the word that comes after the comma or semicolon. The easiest way to see where they go is to read the sentence aloud to yourself. Remember, some sentences might be OK as is.

This is the country I thought half asleep.
Living in those conditions would have turned anyone else rebellious and bitter it was killing Johnny.
I took a deep breath and kept my mouth shut.
"Hey grease we're gonna do you a favor."

Irony (n) Ironic (adj): When something turns out the opposite of what you would expect. Also, sort of like sarcasm. Examples:

It was ironic that the fire station burned down.
It was ironic that the police station was robbed.
It was ironic that the soldier survived the war and then was shot on his own front porch after returning home safely.
Give an example of irony from The Outsiders, and one from real life.

The Outsiders--Aloud to page 55 ("Here!"). Finish Chapter 4 silently, and answer questions in notebook.
