*Action: What the noun does. Examples: dream, walk

*Linking: Links the subject to the predicate. Examples: be+, smells, appears
If it links to another noun, it's ususally action. If it links to an adjective, it's linking.
Example: The chef tastes the desserts. Tastes is an action verb.
The cake tastes delicious. Tastes is a linking verb  BE+ is always a linking or helping verb.

*Helping: Help the main verb, usually with the tense. Together they make up a verb phrase. Examples: has been eating, was running
