WebQuests!
One effective way to set  up a web quest is with Trackstar
(http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/index.jsp)

Here's a demo of one I have used for studying Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance.

Tips:

  1. Surf for the sites first, before beginning to create the track. Open them all in separate windows, so it's easy to copy and paste the urls into the track.
  2. Make the annotations/questions very specific.
  3. You can also insert online quizzes using school.discovery.com. That way they can grade themselves, and print the results page
