Albert Gallatin immigrated to the United States in 1780 from Geneva Switzerland, and was elected to congress in 1795. He was given the title of Secretary of Treasury in 1801 by President Jefferson. It was then that Gallatin arranged for the funding to buy the Louisiana Purchase. He continued in the congress for almost fourteen years, the longest term in the history of the Department. In 1814, after he resigned, he went to Russia to represent the United States in the peace conference with England and France.
