*This sentence, to me, means that without his freinds, family, and townspeople, he wouldn't have had a nice funeral or all of the gifts.  Those people were all he had when he was alive, and the boy was important to all those people who came to his funeral. I think that this passage means that it wasn't all of the nice gifts that made his funeral nice, it was the people who mae it nice.  It was the people who ment the most to him in his life, the people, not the objects, the people.  He didn't have material things or a nice lifestyle, all he had were the people who made-up his life.  His friends were what he lived for.  And it was his friends who hurt the most when he died.
