Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes
is the author of this poem and many other pieces of writing. He was born
in 1902 and died in 1967. He was born in Joplin, Missouri and when he was
very young his parents got divorced. Because of this he grew up living
with his grandmother. When he turned twelve he moved to Lincoln, Illinois,
but then ended up living in Cleveland, Ohio. Langston Hughes began poetry
writing when he was in High School. He then spent a year of his life in
Mexico and then went to college in Columbia University
(click on link to see a picture). It was in 1924 that he moved to Harlem,
New York. The Weary Blues was his first book that was published,
and it was in 1926. In 1929 he completed college at Lincoln University.
For the rest of his life he continued writing, and most of his poetry involved
issues about black people.
