"Theme for English B"
("Y" = YMCA, Winston-Salem and Durham are in North Carolina, Bessie was a famous jazz singer, bop is a type of jazz music, Harlem is a neighborhood in NYC that was predominately black.)

1. Read the poem twice. Try to pay attention to the punctuation.
2. What are your first reactions to this poem? (Like? Dislike? What kind of person wrote it? Theme? Lesson? Message?)
3. Ask three good questions to try to help you understand the poem.
4. Why do you think he spends so much of the poem explaining how he goes home?
5. What does he mean by, "...but I guess I'm what I feel and see and hear..."?
6. What does he mean by, "So will my pages be colored that I write? Being me they will not be white."?
