A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb.
INDEPENDENT = Can stand alone as a sentence.
DEPENDENT = Cannot.
Example:

• Tara ate a cheese roll after she watched The Simpsons.
  (Independent clause. Could be a sentence on its own.
• Tara ate a cheese roll after she watched The Simpsons.
  (Dependent clause. Cannot stand alone as a sentence.)
