IBM 7090 computer. Operators working with an IBM 7090 computer at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California, USA. The first of four IBM 7090s was delivered here in April 1960. This computer was the first 7000 series machine to use transistors. A data processing system control panel is at centre, with magnetic tape drives in the background.

They rented time on this computer for today’s equivalent of  $400,00/month.

A week of computing time on a modern laptop would take longer than the age of the universe on the 7090.
