Mental Floss: (Every Friday) Brain teasers and trick questions to scrape the mucous off your brain before a test. Purely extra credit. NO penalty for wrong answers, so you may as well guess. If it looks like a trick, it probably is. ALWAYS MAKE A GUESS!

Start with a blank sheet in your notebook.

“Delinquent, 8/16.”

“It takes a village to raise a child.”   -African Proverb.  (copy into notebook)

What do you think that means? Do you think it’s true? Explain why/not.

What does delinquent mean?

I read the poem out loud. Groups take a shot at the questions in their notebooks. Then we go through it!

Delinquent –Langston Hughes

Little Julie
Has grown quite tall.
Folks say she don’t like
To stay home at all.
Little Julie
Has grown quite stout.
Folks say it’s not just
Stomach sticking out.

Little Julie
Has grown quite wise-
A tiger, a lion, and an owl
In her Eyes.

Little Julie
Says she don’t care!
What she means is:
Nobody cares
Anywhere.

  1. “Folks say she don’t like to stay home at all.” Guess what he might mean.
  2. What kind of “wise” does he mean?
  3. What qualities do we usually associate with lions, tigers and owls? What is he trying to say about Julie?
  4. What is the message of this poem? (In other words, what does Julie need?)

Outro: Connect the poem to the quote!
